Crochet Headband Pattern Free

Free Crochet Headband Pattern

I spent a couple of hours this weekend making crochet headbands for the children and thought I’d share the results along with the patterns. I made 3 different headbands for the girls and as I also made one recently for a colleague, I’m including a pattern for that too (which is the first one in this post).

I have written all patterns in British English.

Bow Style Crochet Headband Pattern – Great For Beginners Or For A Quick Make

Free crochet headband pattern by Love Emmaline

Yarn: Monsoon Aran
Hook: 4.5mm

Skill level: beginner.
Stitches used: half treble crochet (htc).

Pattern notes: The first version of the pattern is shorthand for seasoned pattern readers, the second has step-by-step instructions with pictures for complete novices.

Shorthand Pattern:

Headband

ch12.
Row 1: htc into each ch, ch1, turn.
Repeat row 1 until headband is long enough to fit around your head.
Fasten off.
Stitch ends together.
Weave in ends.

Bow
Cut a length of the wool around 25 inches long. Decide where you want the bow, pinch the sides of the crochet headband together and wrap wool around tightly and knot at the back to secure. Trim end.

Step-by-step instructions for beginners

Make a slip knot on your hook.
Make 14 chains (this will determine the width of the headband, for a thinner band, make less chains and vice versa for a wider headband).

Row 1
Stitch a Half Treble Crochet into each chain:
Yarn around hook.
Insert your hook into the 3rd chain from the hook and pull through a loop (3 loops on hook).
Yarn around hook (4 loops on hook).
Pull hook through all the loops.

Stitch a Half Treble Crochet (htc) into each of the other chains, when you have made the last htc, make 1 chain before turning your work to work on the next row – this will keep the work tidy and give a straight edge, it’s referred to as a turning chain.

Row 2
Work along the second row as you did in row 1, but instead of stitching into chains, you will be stitching a htc into both loops of every stitch you made on the previous row (the loops are at the top of the stitch).

Row 3 and beyond
Keep stitching rows until you have enough length to fit the head your crochet headband is going to be adorning!

Fasten off the yarn.
Sew the two ends together.
Weave in any loose ends.

Bow
Cut a length of the wool around 25 inches long. Decide where you want the bow, pinch the sides of the crochet headband together and wrap wool around tightly and knot at the back to secure. Trim end.

Enjoy your new headband!

  1. Thanks for the easy to follow instructions ! I made this today, It was my first crochet project that turned out really great !

  2. Hi there, I found your free pattern on Pinterest and I just wanted to say thank you so much, your instructions are very well written! So far I have made six headbands all in different yarns. I have also made two cowls/scarves by using your pattern with a huge 11.5mm hook and they have turned out beautifully!
Thanks so much, keep up the good work!

  3. hi, thank you so much for these well written instructions. I am 15 and I could understand them so we’ll, and now I love to make headbands. Thank you!!!

  4. Hi Emmaline. Cute headband and thanks for making the pattern free. I’m looking at the shorthand vs the beginner pattern. Why 12 chains in the shorthand and 14 in the beginner? I understand skipping chains for the first htc, but that part is not in the shorthand. Is there a reason? I’m a professional beginner at crochet, btw, so mostly curious. I’d use the beginner version regardless.

    1. Hi Mels,

Thanks for the nice feedback 🙂

Not sure about the discrepancy in chains as I published this quite a while ago! I would think it was a typo on my part, you can make as many chains as you like as this will determine the width of your crocheted headband 🙂

Good luck with all your creations! Emm
